2012 Grand National
Post Race InformationWell another Grand National comes to a close, and this race will be remembered because of the third grey horse ever to win the national won today. Neptune Collonges won the race today and was the first winner for champion trainer Paul Nicholls.
There was some excitement in the betting before the race when seabass a horse ridden by the trainer Ted Walsh's daughter Katie attracted a lot of interest. The starting price of the horse tumbled on the day and at the off time was 8 to 1 joint favourite. Katie in her first ever Grand National finished in the highest place of any female rider when she made the frame and finished in third place.
The winner today ran well carrying 11 stone 6 pounds and that was the highest weight carried by a winner since Red Rum carried 11 stone and 8 pounds to win his third Grand National in 1977.
It was a fantastic performance as Neptune Collonges who ran steadily throughout the race and was never at the head of the pack until the last stride of the race.
The second place horse Sunnyhillboy also ran a great race but like so many before him was caught in the run in however this was the closest finish that we have seen in the Grand National. He ran with great credit and as he is only nine years old he should be back for another crack at the title next year.
Cappa bleu finished in fourth place and was given a great ride by Paul Moloney and was trained by Evan Williams who is making something of a habit of his horses running extremely well in this race with State of Play always running well obtaining good places.
Only 15 runners finished this year which given the good ground was something of a surprise with 17 of the 40 runners not contesting the second lap of the course. Another exciting race with a very exciting finish was seen by all today.
